Walking. It's easy, safe and FREE!

Let's all come up with a plan to walk and be accountable to each other by logging in here with our miles we walk each day/week.

Even if you only start out by walking around the block, log in that you did just that!

Bring us on your walk as you describe here what you saw, what fragrances were in the air.  Was it spring flowers? Ocean breeze? Montain dew?

What did you hear? Waves crashing against the rocks at the seaside? Birds in the park?

Maybe you've joined or have been thinking of joining a walking club. Tell us about it, or, this is the time to join one.

Maybe you have a dog, like me, that keeps looking at you each day wondering if you're gonna take them for a walk!

Maybe you could take a picture of your walk and post it here to share with us.

Let's do it!!!!

Yea, day 2 at the pool for a few laps.  Came back to house.  Got dressed and decided since it was still cool enough I would walk to end end of the block and back which is about 1/4 mile.  So far so good.

Since I have not had any physical activity and quite a while I decided that I will start out slow and work my way into doing more as I get used to it.

Ran a mile on Tuesday. Hope to try running again Friday. My husband died almost a year ago. I started running in January to relieve stress and ran a 5k in March. I had to stop a week later when I had surgery so I'm just trying to get back into it. Depression kicked in a little after being laid up for so long so I'm hoping this will help me get through it. My daughter and I hope to run a half marathon next January. I hope you'll except a wannabe runner to this group. I need the accountability.

RAN???? WOW, I"m impressed.  I would like to run, but am afraid to...afraid my knee will give out, I will hurt my back, although Saturday I did run to the car and into the store (really ran, was late for my son's wedding!)  I might try it on of these days.

Today I walked 57 minutes on the treadmill, forgot to check the milage, but assume it was about 3.25 to 3.5 at the end.  I normally walk after work, but woke up an hour early and decided to go to the gym this morning.

I used to run 10k and I did run a half marathon once. I haven't run since I was in an accident about 15 yrs ago. I tried but my hip and foot where in pain. I went for physical therapy and the chiro and am much better. I'd had hope to maybe run/walk in a marathon in my city this October, but might need to put it off until next year.

Glad you posted. This will give me incentive to walk today. I had a headach all day yesterday and into the eve so didn't do much of anything but make it to work.

Hey, thanks for the encouragement to get out there and keep moving!

Have a great day! It's a beautiful day here. I might just take myself out to Bolsa Chica Wetlands after seeing my client today! I'll report back later and maybe even take some pics!

This has been an exceptionally difficult month with trigger dates all over the calendar this month of June.

But today, the day after the 9 month of "without him" I actually went for a nice long walk at Bolsa Chica Wetlands this morning from 9:30 a.m to 11:30 a.m.! A 2 hour walk and I walked further than I usually do, exploring trails I hadn't been on before. And, I went with another widower so the conversation was laced with comments and memories of our spouses.

What a healing afternoon morning it was especially when the day before was a difficult one!

Say, anyone in the So Cal area like to walk? We should try and get a Widow/ers walking hiking club together!

Oh, I brought my camera and didn't even take any pics :(. Oh well, next time!

Sherbear...Good for you!! I am so glad, I could almost feel it, your walk with your friend, the exploring of new places...the going further than ever...way to recuperate, hon, from the day before.  So impressed.  I wish I lived closer, I'd love to take long walks with you.  I managed to make it to the neighborhood pool for the first time last night.  Didn't swim, I have to work my way into swimming carefully, with neck and back injuries, but it was wonderful to move through the water, feel it cooling down my bones, all alone there in the evening.  Went through a good part of the T'ai Chi form I used to teach, there in the water.

Had to leave when the precious memories of being there with Billie overwhelmed me into tears that would not stop...but it's a start.  Best wishes to all of us, struggling and striving to overcome the desire to lay down and die ourselves.  One day at a time.  Sometimes just one hour at a time.  But, we're doing it. Kudos!

Been to the gym several days in a row, minumum of three miles each time.  This is a busy week for me, so not sure how often I will get to go this week.  If I wake up early enough tomorrow I'll go before work, otherwise I might not get to walk tomorrow.

I've made a list of things that make me feel better and make me feel worse. Walking on the beautiful NJ beach, especially in the early a.m., when the tide is low, is definitely one of them.  My Husband never walked on the beach with me; he had PAD and his legs would cramp up.  I also enjoy riding my bike on the boardwalk but I've learned to change my route because I get choked up when I pass the places we rode/ ate breakfast together.

Working out has definitely been a positive for me;also playing golf. Being in my house is the most difficult. Working on that.

HI sherbear and others--Lee and I had started a walkabout blog last fall but it went by the wayside during winter, so very happy to see that you have started one up again! here is a link to it, hopefully some of these folks will join in here.

I have been using Leki Nordic Walking Poles since last summer and I find they greatly enhance my walking experience. They give me added stability (I have a bad ankle) and they also give a good upperbody workout (you push off lightly with the poles; like using cross country ski poles) supposedly up to 40% better workout than walking alone. Anyway, they are fun and I fell better when I use them! :-)

I'd love to hear from anyone else in WV who is using them. I plan on taking them to CW in August to use in the 5K walk. It would be cool if we could get some other Nordic Walk Campers together for a team!

I live up the coast from you, in San Luis Obispo area. If your SoCal walking/hiking group ever comes up this way, I'd love to meet you! There are lots of trails and miles of beaches up here for walking/hiking etc. I see from some of your photos that you've visited Sequoia--my hangout in the 70's. We hiked a bit out of Giant Forest to King's Cyn and also over in Mineral King basin area. Also, is that a photo I see of Shell Beach?

Today my client I had scheduled to see cancelled so I had the morning off. I returned my friends call earlier for an invite for a walk and decided to take her up on it. We walked in a nearby park that has a 3 mile walkway. Along the way we met another friend that was walking her dog so she joined in.

It was good to be with them and catch up on everyones lives.

Afterwards my friend asked me out  for a belated birthday lunch.

It really was what I needed. We ended up speaking of things from 9 months ago when Dave died that I hadn't spoken to anyone about. It was healing. I cried and it was the first time I cried with her since the day Dave died.

I actually told her I think I need to make some time to get together with her and her husband and talk about Dave and actually weep. She told me sometimes she will here her husband in the bedroom behind closed door just crying because he misses his best friend Dave.

You just never know what a walk will turn into.

Awww. Sherbear what a cleansing wonderful time for you .  Walking is moving forward to healing . You are doing great my friend -  Blessings - Lisa

Okay, the last time I ran was when I posted on June 7th. I guess it's going to take a while to get the habit back. Finally ran again today. 3 and a half miles interval running, quarter mile running alternating with quarter mile walking. It felt really good, but I don't know how to get myself motivated to get out there. I'm signed up for the Tinkerbell Half Marathon next January so I hope I can get myself going. HELP.
