Several nights on chat the discussion of weight was brought up. Some lost some after the death of their spouse, while others gained. It spurred some to get healthy, and others binged.
I'd love to use this discussion to talk about our weight, our goals, and how our grief defines our weight struggles. Lets support one another in our weight wishes!

Permalink Reply by mahagen on March 21, 2012 at 10:00am That's great. My body, like my personality, seems to be a little stubborn. I have been staying on program (Weight watchers), but have tiny gains (.2 to .4) for two to three weeks, then a big loss (4 to 5 lbs) then back to the tiny gains. I walk 3.5 to 4 miles 5 times a week. With spring yard work, I'm going to have to skip the gym a few more times a week to get yard work done, but that's still exercise.
Permalink Reply by smit09 on March 21, 2012 at 10:23am for me: when my hubby died, I was still pregnant! Ever since I've known my husband, not a day would pass without him telling me that i was beautiful! --it increased when I was carrying his child! I miss that!
It has been *almost* 6 months now since he's been gone, and I've heard maybe a few people say "you are beautiful"
I've lost the baby weight, Im back to my normal weight! NOW just to TONE!!! :)
Permalink Reply by poohpunkie on March 21, 2012 at 10:49am I joined weight watchers back in September last year, only lost 3lbs. I had been on ww before and lost 40, I just can't do it right now, it takes so much focus and I don't have it. I have been gaining weight since February and clothes are starting to get tight. I really do want to lose the weight, but with my two little girls, school, work and everything else that I now do, it's seems overwhelming to me to focus on it. I also think my not losing weight is my way of keeping men away from me, I think that if someone really liked me then they would like all of me, that is how Greg was, he was happy for me when I lost weight a few years ago, but not because he wanted me to, because I wanted to and it made me feel better about me, it made me happy. I think that I punish myself for wanting to be happy too, because he is not here, how can I be happy without him?
That being said I know I need to lose the weight to be more healthy, to set a good example for my children. I know it is the right thing to do, I'm just not there yet.........
Permalink Reply by CrazyWidow on March 21, 2012 at 10:56am Mahagen - That's frustrating, but in the "overall" sense of things you ARE losing. I'm amazing at all the walking you are doing - how do you fit it in - how long does it take you to walk 3.5-4 miles. How long did it take to build up to that? I Loooove to walk and hike and I'd like to get motivated to do it more.
Storm - AWESOME! I can't have the things I love in the house either otherwise I eat them all! I do keep substitutes around that I enjoy, though, and that helps subdue my cravings. What type of exercise are you doing?
Smit - Congrats on losing the baby weight, and you ARE beautiful (inside and out). I'd like to tone as I lose too so I don't have a bunch of skin flab. What do you want to do to tone?
Pooh - It's such a head game, isn't? The combination of grieving and health and loving again and kids and just freakin' everything! You want to be healthy for your kids which may be a better goal for you right now than being healthy for you. I never used to say this, but I'm starting to "get it". I don't have kids, so I have and had to get to a place where I wanted to be healthy just for me, to be selfish, and man that's hard after a loss such as this. I started with very small goals this time. Like just MOVING 10 minutes a day. Could that work for you? I use sparkpeople.com because it's similar to weight watchers, but FREE!

Thanks for the suggestions about moving 10 minutes a day and using sparkpeople.com, I will defintely try both. I think you are right about starting to be healthy for the kids, I have done most everything else with them in mind so that might work for me too :)

Permalink Reply by mahagen on March 21, 2012 at 11:42am I am a treadmill walker. The treadmills at the gym have programs that speed up and slow down, elevate and go back down. I set the length of time for the program and the top speed. I use 10, 15 and 20 minute increments. I walk around 60 minutes. During that time I watch a personal DVD player. Right now I'm going through the entire run of West Wing. Each episode is about 43 minutes. I walk without entertainment for 15 minutes, then watch my DVD for 43 and nothing the last couple of minutes. If someone stops by to talk, I walk longer. It has taken me a year to get from a 20 minute walk to a 60 minute walk. I took it very slowly. I NEVER RUN!
Permalink Reply by CrazyWidow on March 21, 2012 at 2:24pm Wow, that's AWESOME. I used to try running (working up to a 5k) but no longer am allowed to due to recent back surgery.
I'm not a big treadmill person - prefer to be outdoors, but I can see doing that by watching your favorite episodes of a show. Great plan :)
Permalink Reply by CrazyWidow on March 26, 2012 at 1:49pm Up 3 pounds. But good habits formed, so I'm continuing forward.
i lost 15 pounds while my husband was in the hospital. another 5 after his death. I was too nervous to eat and at that point underweight...you could see my rib cage/
as i grieved, cooking was one way i took care of myself. I had to adjust to cooking for one that was not easy.
then i found i was eating out of boredom. granted i was eating healthy stuff (things i cooked nothing processed) but i am still eating too much.
its hard to get motivated to diet. I'm like "who cares!?!?!" "whats the point"
Permalink Reply by CrazyWidow on March 29, 2012 at 9:21am Eating healthy is not a bad thing, even if you're eating more. The motivation part is hard though, that part I definitely understand. What is something that DOES motivate you?
