I was the full time caregiver for my dear husband for two years before he finally succumbed to a fungus as part of the progression of COPD.  His daughter and I were with him for the last five days and both of us are grateful that we got to be there and share goodbyes.  We miss him and cry for him every day, but things are gradually getting better.

Ok, I'm just catching up on reading posts, and now I'm sitting here imagining y'all huddled up with your kids during storms, any chance you were singing together, because the image conjures up Maria and the VonTrapp children all on her bed singing about a few of their favorite things...

I'm so pleased you received so many responses, Sheila. Yes, of course, you belong here!

Sheila, you are welcome in BOTH groups if you like. There are folks with diseases that are known for being fast -- like heart attacks -- who live with heart disease or diabetes or other issues for many years, and those with cancer and other supposedly long term illnesses who die very quickly. While these "divisions" don't last long, we can have very valuable discussions over common issues like shock, caregiving, and so on that MAY attach to one type of loss...

My goal is for as rich a conversation as possible -- so share anywhere you hear an echo, or start a discussion topic in the Forums if you don't.

Widowed people are to wonderful to fit into simple categories, so please make friends where you find them!

X

I don't know where to begin??? I sought out something or someone who really understands how I feel and I've found that on this sight. Losing my husband, my partner, the itimacy that being together produced, is the worst thing imaginable with the exception, I guess, of losing a child. You watch the progression of the illness - whether the progression of diabetes, heart disease or cancer - it hurts! I was in full denial until he took his last breath.

I agree with Marly, Sheila this group is for long term illness. That includes everything, not just cancer. I do understand about the heart attacks as Keith had several over a 10 year period and then had bypass surgery that went wrong. He recovered, and in the end it was a very strong heart that meant he struggled to pass away.

Darling, you belong here as much as the rest of us, 12 years is longterm in anyone's book. Even three weeks is longterm in the scheme of things, it's all relative

Sheila, of course you belong here.  Illness is illness.  I totally understand about the diabetes and heart disease.  Diabetes is a progressive disease - I have it too.  As far as all the heart attacks - that scares me silly!!  My family history is full of diabetics with heart disease.  I'm okay in the heart department so far, but that could change at any time.  You DO belong here, girlfriend!!!
