Hi tooyoungtobealone,  My heart goes out to you and your daughter.  You are not just whining; this is an excrutiatingly painful experience so soon after your husband's passing.  I don't have a lot of suggestions beyond the things you are trying to do to help your daughter.  It is understandable that it is just too painful for her right now and she doesn't want to attend the dance with someone else.  I wanted to say though that I am not sure about the situation of your daughter's school but it might be suggested that they consider a "parent dance" in the future.  My children's school does this instead and it is much more inclusive and sensitive to the unique family compositions that make up students' lives.  Many students are missing one of the parents from their lives, many times dads although certainly not always, and having a parent/guardian dance instead allows those students to be included as well.  It was nice of the counselor to reach out to you.  Take care
