On July 19th it was 3 years since I saw Don last. Three years, how can that be? The time has passed so quickly and so much has changed in our lives since then. Don was loved and respected by many. His dear friend and my best friend wrote this poem this year on his anniversary. It says it all- Home too soon and we still hurt and miss him each and every day.
Home Too Soon
Something inside you was broken
Though immersing yourself in your work
Your “Hikes” ceased to help in your suffering
You were shattered deep down in your hurt...
The light in your face kept on waning
But your burden you never could share
Wretched thoughts entered in to deceive you
Falsely declaring “this life you can’t bear!”
In fatigue you then cried, “I am finished,
I have given all I can give…
There’s no strength in me left to keep fighting,
It’s dark, I’m too tired to live!”
In this struggle you made a decision,
As the hope in your heart was immune.
So you left us that day, my friend Mowery
But you know that you went home too soon.
There was grace in the Lord that received you,
Though I don’t think that your mansion was done,
The Lamb of God knows well about suffering
Precious blood shed from our Savior, God’s Son
I will say that it could have been different,
That with healing, more life you’d possess
But the ending we know we can’t change now
God’s peace to you now in your rest.
